Background
The concept for Aspiring Attitudes was born in a Dance Studio Management class at OCU in 1992.  Our director, Shannon Wrights, who is visually impaired, had a dream of wanting to run a dance studio that worked with dancers with disabilities. She graduated from OCU in 1993. Shannon started out teaching dance at a home school coop in 2001. In 2005, parents of a 3 year old (Cora) with cerebral palsy were searching for a dance teacher to work with their daughter.  OCU referred them to Shannon.  Cora thrived under Shannon’s teaching and soon more students with special needs were seeking her out for dance instruction.  Shannon merged her home school students with the special needs students and taught them out of her home for about 10 years. All students danced together at recitals and performances. In 2016, non profit status for Aspiring Attitudes was obtained with the idea of opening a studio.  That studio was opened in 2018 and has now grown to over 75 students. Aspiring Attitudes is now fulfilling the dream that Shannon had of allowing anyone who wants to experience dance the opportunity to do so regardless of physical, intellectual, emotional, or financial limitations.
