Background The Oklahoma Assistive Technology Foundation's (OkAT) primary mission is to promote community development through assisting Oklahomans with disabilities of all ages and their family members, advocates, authorized representatives and other appropriate individuals or entities to increase understanding, access to, and acquisition of assistive technology through financial loans, financial education, and other identified resources.  Assistive Technology (AT) is any item, device or piece of equipment used to maintain or improve a person's capabilities, allowing them to function independently in recreation, education, employment, and daily living activities. OkAT was incorporated as a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization.  The Board of Directors consists of nine individuals, the majority of which have disabilities or family members with disabilities.  The purpose of OkAT is to encourage interagency collaborations, and to advocate for systems change so that every person in Oklahoma who needs assistive technology will have and be able to use appropriate devices that match with their individual needs.  Since 2001, OkAT, in partnership with Oklahoma ABLE Tech and BancFirst of Stillwater, has provided $6.8 Million in financing options with low interest and flexible repayment terms for Oklahomans to purchase AT to help them live, work, and learn independently.  Recently, this financial loan program was expanded to direct loans with no fees in order to serve even more Oklahomans  needing affordable options to purchase assistive technology.  In addition to the financial loan program, OkAT also looks for other projects to provide community development and programs for people with disabilities and as a result frequently has the opportunity to collaborate with a number of entities across the state that support individuals with disabilities in education, employment, health care, and daily living environments.  The partnership with ABLE Tech in their Durable Medical Equipment Reutilization program provides another opportunity to serve Oklahomans in need of equipment to assist them in their daily living activities.  In addition, OkAT has received grans from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) since 2003 to install smoke alarms and specialized alert equipment in the homes of individuals with a documented disability including people who are: deaf, hard of hearing, blind, low vision and/or use a mobility device.
