Mission The Oklahoma Zoological Society is a nonprofit organization created to support and promote the Oklahoma City Zoological Park and its programs in education, conservation, zoological research and recreation.
The Oklahoma Zoological Society (OZS) was founded in 1954 as Friends of the Zoo and has worked hand in hand ever since with the Oklahoma City Zoological Park to insure its vitality.  In 1963, Friends of the Zoo was incorporated as the Oklahoma Zoological Society.  It was at this time that the city of Oklahoma City granted the Society increased responsibility for the management of the zoo and raising funds to keep its doors open.  Thanks to the creation of a large active membership, OZS raised funds to build exhibits, maintain a professional staff and purchase animals.
In 1975, OZS worked witht the City of Oklahoma City to create the OKC Zoological Trust, a public trust that is the governing authority of the OKC Zoo.  The 1/8 cent sales tax that is now dedicated to the zoo was an effort organized by OZS leadership.  With the passage of the zoo tax in 1990, OZS's focus changed from providing basic needs to providing enrichment needs.
OZS has made major capital contributions for the Joan Kirkpatrick Animal Hospital, Asian Elephant Demonstration Pavilion, Noble Aquatic Center, the Children's Zoo, the Dan Moran Aviary, Great EscAPE, Lorikeet Exhibit, Zoo wide signage and the Rosser Conservation Education Center.
Impact The Oklahoma City Zoo holds a special place in the hearts and lives of nearly every family in our community.  Nothing else in our community brings people together across every spectrum of age, gender and race.  It's no surprise!  There's nothing quite like a trip to the Oklahoma City Zoo - walking through Oklahoma Trails to watch 900 pound Grizzly Bears playing in their waterfall, or seeing our Asian elephant calf for the first time...the Zoo is a precious part of Oklahoma City.  Gifts to the Oklahoma Zoological Society help ensure the the Oklahoma City Zoo remains one of the nation's best zoos!
CEO/Executive Director Statement Since its founding in 1954 as Friends of the Zoo, the Oklahoma Zoological Society has worked closely with the Oklahoma City Zoo to ensure its vitality.  When nine visionary community leaders launched the Oklahoma Zoological Society they envisioned helping the Oklahoma City Zoo become a world-class zoo.  Since that day, OZS has worked tirelessly to fulfill its mission to support and promote the OKC Zoo and its programs in education, conservation, zoological research and recreation. By working hand in hand, this successful partnership has gained national renown, showing how the public and private sectors can work together for the greatest common good.  I invite you to get involved.  Give, volunteer and tell others about our great Zoo!
