Background

Edmond Mobile Meals began in 1971 as a telephone ministry that was organized by several local churches. This group of individuals began calling homebound residents on a daily basis to ask what their needs were and to lend a friendly voice. What this group quickly realized was that the biggest need of those whom they were calling was simply a meal.  This ministry developed into what is now Edmond Mobile Meals and has been serving hot noon-time meals since April 22, 1974. The first day of service, we delivered 6 meals and are currently averaging 190 per day. We currently have over 350 volunteers who serve daily in the kitchen, drive a route, help with inventory, do grocery shopping, put together blizzard and birthday bags as well as assist in the office. Without their tenacity and continued efforts, Edmond Mobile Meals would not be able to serve the almost 400 people a year that we do. Our goal is to make sure we never have anyone on a waiting list and are able to serve the growing elderly population in Edmond.   

Impact
Our accomplishments include:
 
1. Creating an additional route to accommodate for the increased number of clients needing the service.
2. Complete kitchen renovation to maximize services offered.
3. Enrolled over 200 new clients in 2015.
4.Built endowment to ensure future growth.
 
Our goals for this year are:
 
1.To increase awareness of our program in order to make sure all Edmond residents know about our services.
2. Find weekend meal options
3. Raise funds for increased food costs 
4. Plan for growing client base to ensure no one is ever on a waiting list

Edmond Mobile Meals holds such a special place in the hearts of not only clients, but volunteers who pour their valuable time and resources into making sure our mission continues on a daily basis. We are so fortunate to have wonderful people in our office on a daily basis that are looking to serve their community in a very direct way. This organization began with neighbors caring for neighbors and it continues to thrive because of that same mindset. It is truly a privilege to be part of a team that is caring for those in the Edmond community.

Board Chair Statement

Edmond Mobile Meals (EMM) brings improved nutrition, independence, a break from isolation and a greater security to the homebound elderly and disabled citizens in our community.  

As the population of our city continues to age, the number of elderly, homebound individuals will continue to increase.  It is our desire as an organization to provide meals for all of the people in Edmond who cannot leave their homes or may be unable to prepare their own meals

 The 300 volunteers, financial contributors, board members and staff at Edmond Mobile Meals understand that cooking and delivering meals to the people in our community is a privilege. They are the backbone of this great program and Edmond Mobile Meals could not operate without their unselfish support.  

Yet it is through this service, that our volunteers receive more than they give. Mother Teresa said, “If you want to feel good about yourself, go out and volunteer for someone else …”  Sharing smiles, love, kindness and a warm meal—neighbors helping neighbors in Edmond--is what makes EMM more than just a meal.

Description

 

Edmond Mobile Meals in Edmond, Oklahoma is a non-profit charitable organization, and has operated independently since 1974. It provides hot, nourishing meals to elderly and disabled persons who are unable to prepare meals for themselves. The meals and daily contact by caring volunteers allow frail, homebound persons to remain in their own homes, where they want to be. Other people need just a little help to recover from an illness or hospitalization.

We serve people who are:

Primarily homebound

Unable to easily prepare nutritious meals

Without consistent daytime assistance from another person

These are general guidelines so if you feel you or someone you know would benefit from receiving Mobile Meals, please contact us. There are no age or income requirements. We ask that, where possible, those receiving meals make a small contribution for their meals.

The mission and what we do is identical to the program Carolyn Vance began in 1974-only the numbers have changed. We now have over 300 volunteers helping cook and deliver approximately 4000 meals each month, and the number of people we serve has grown from six to over 190 each day. By delivering a smile and a warm meal each day, we try to make lives better for our homebound neighbors who need just a little help to live independently.

As the population of Edmond increases and the number of elderly individuals in the Edmond area grows, Edmond Mobile Meals would like to continue being a no-wait list program. It is our desire that we are able to serve every individual that qualifies for our program and to do this our fundraising efforts have increased dramatically. Some of the challenges we face include the rising cost of food and milk, the number of individuals needing to be on the program as well as maintaining trained volunteers to continuously help our program.

The largest challenge we are currently facing is the rising cost of food and supplies. We are primarily funded by grants and local support but because of this there are not as many funding streams as we need to continue to operate on such a large scale.
