Background Founded in 1910, Oklahoma Baptist University is a senior-level coeducational institution with an enrollment of 2,073 (Fall 2016). About 65 percent of OBU's students are from Oklahoma, while the other 35 percent come from 35 other states and 46 foreign countries.

OBU is located in Shawnee, a city of 30,600 residents, 35 miles east of Oklahoma City and 90 miles southwest of Tulsa, near the geographical center of the state. OBU's 226-acre campus is on the northwest edge of Shawnee just two miles south of Interstate Highway 40.

The University offers 10 baccalaureate degrees in 88 areas of study; four master's degrees, and an associate degree in Christian studies.
OBU's educational programs are fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the Association of Collegiate Business Schools, the National Association of Schools of Music, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, and the Oklahoma Commission on Teacher Preparation. Faculty to student ratio is one to 15, which allows faculty members to develop personal relationships with their students, enhancing the liberal arts experience.

OBU's campus is known by the school's students and alumni as Bison Hill. The main part of campus features 40 major buildings including the landmark Raley Chapel; historic Shawnee Hall; Geiger Center, social center for the University community; Mabee Fine Arts Center; Mabee Learning Center, a comprehensive library, media and learning resources center; Noble Complex, a health and physical education center; Recreation and Wellness Center (RAWC), a modern facility providing physical fitness, intramural, and recreation programs; W.P. Wood Science Building; Sarkeys Telecommunication Center; Thurmond Hall, which houses administration; Montgomery Hall (religious life offices); Bailey Business Center; Cargill Center, home for OBU advancement and alumni offices; and Jane E. and Nick K. Stavros Hall, new home of the College of Nursing.
Campus housing includes five residence centers and several apartment units. The  new student housing village has apartments that offer individual bedrooms for students in three or four-bedroom units. Each apartment includes a common living area, a kitchen, and two bathrooms. Each of the four buildings offers two safe rooms as well as laundry facilities. Building Four was completed and put into use in Fall 2015.
Impact For the 25th straight year, Oklahoma Baptist University is a "top 10" school in the annual U.S. News & World Report rankings of "America's Best Colleges." OBU is ranked fifth in the west in the 2017 rankings of "Best Regional Colleges." 

OBU was one of 126 schools to receive The Princeton Review's "Best in the West" designation for 2017. The list is based on the publication's student opinion data. OBU has been included in the listings for twelve consecutive years.

OBU consistently is ranked in the Forbes.com listing of "America’s Best Colleges.
OBU is one of three universities in Oklahoma and the only private Oklahoma university listed on Great Value College's rankings of 50 Great Affordable Colleges in the Midwest (25 public, 25 private).

OBU is the world's leading college in the number of alumni serving as missionaries with the Southern Baptist International Mission Board. This strongly affirms OBU's mission preparation tradition and long history of raising up young men and women for missions.
The new Jane E. and Nick K. Stavros Hall, home of the OBU College of Nursing was completed and opened for use in Spring 2016. The two-story, 31,000 sq. ft. nursing education facility contains five classrooms, with a 30-seat classroom, three 65-seat classrooms and a 109-seat lecture hall, as well as a state-of-the art computer lab. The facility features six state-of-the art, high-tech skills simulation labs with 22 beds. These include a medium skills lab, a health assessment skills lab, a low risk skills lab and a home health and bathing training room. The building also includes the administrative office suite for the College of Nursing, a conference room, faculty offices and office space for adjunct faculty.
Endowment ($2,000,000) OBU has a strong endowment fund that provides scholarships and initiatives while facilitating growth and minimizing inflation. Additional endowment will strengthen student scholarships, endowed academic chairs and professorships, campus lecture series, the honors program, and the faculty sabbatical program.
W.P. Wood Science Building Expansion ($6,500,000) Strong programs in physics, biology, mathematics and chemistry have taxed the resources of the W.P. Wood Science Building. To house the newly established James E. Hurley College of Science and Mathematics, the University plans to add a new section to the existing building that will provide 11,000 sq. ft. of added space for much-needed laboratories and storage areas, while reconfiguring and enhancing existing classrooms and labs.
Ford Music Hall ($1,400,000) The primary practice facility for students in the Division of Music, Ford Music Hall has been part of the campus since 1951. The three-story structure includes piano practice rooms and space for OBU Preparatory Department classes and choral rehearsals. Renovation will include a new heating/cooling system, a new roof, a new card-access entry system, and significant interior renovations including updated furniture.

The College of Science and Mathematics supports degree programs in natural science, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics designed to prepare students for graduate study or careers, as well as spiritual integration that will provide opportunities for success in an ever-changing social environment.
OBU's College of Nursing is a baccalaureate program for the preparation of a professional nurse. The nursing faculty view nursing as a Christian ministry and as a professional practice. During nursing courses students learn to provide quality nursing care through competent practice. Upon completion of the program, the graduate is qualified to take the national examination for licensure as a registered nurse in a state of choice. The College of Nursing offers a Bachelor of Science degree which combines professional education in theory and practice of nursing with a basic liberal arts education.

The OBU College of Humanities & Social Sciences is composed of four divisions: Division of Language and Literature, the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences, the Division of Kinesiology and Leisure Studies, and the Division of Teacher Education.
Degree programs offered within these divisions prepare students for direct entry into a wide variety of careers. Many students also study in these disciplines as undergraduate liberal arts preparation for further graduate study in such professions as law and medicine. Faculty advisors counsel with students to help them select appropriate courses and plan programs of study to meet their particular career needs.

Description The mission of the Hershel H. Hobbs College of Theology and Ministry is to promote the intellectual and spiritual development of Oklahoma Baptist University students through a rigorous engagement with the classical disciplines of religion and philosophy as well as the applied disciplines of Christian ministry, all within the context of OBU's liberal arts curriculum. To achieve this purpose, the College of Theology and Ministry cooperates with the various academic departments of the university by offering introductory courses in Biblical studies and philosophy in the General Education program as well as a wide range of major emphases in Religion, Philosophy, and Applied Ministry leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree.

Experience A fifth-generation Oklahoman, Dr. David W. Whitlock was born in Purcell and graduated from Wayne High School. He completed a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Southeastern in 1984, a master's degree in business administration from Southeastern in 1985, and a doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies from the University of Oklahoma in 1995.

Whitlock began his career at Southeastern Oklahoma State University where he taught for 14 years. He joined the Southeastern faculty in 1985 as an instructor of business, was promoted to assistant professor in 1991 and associate professor in 1996. He was named chair of the university's business information management program in 1995 and served in that role until moving to Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri.

Whitlock served on the administration of SBU from 1999-2008. He was the associate provost, beginning in 2006, and dean of the college of business and computer science and also was a professor of business at the university. During Whitlock's tenure as dean of SBU's college of business and computer science, the program grew in enrollment and earned recognition as a "top 10 Christian business school" in rankings of career placement and faculty quality, according to Business Reform magazine.

In 2007, Whitlock was appointed dean of SBU's adult off-campus programs. In that role he oversaw planning and administration of all the university's graduate programs and administered off-campus programs in three locations. From 2001-2006, he served as assistant to SBU President C. Pat Taylor for strategic planning, coordinating the institution's five-year strategic plan.

Whitlock has played an active role in international programs, working with educational organizations in the United Arab Emirates, China, Russia, and several European countries.

Whitlock has served as a bi-vocational pastor, has authored, co-authored or edited four books related to business fields, and has been a contributing writer for numerous works.
